In 1969, when New Hampshire officials decided to put the state’s motto – “live free or die” — on its license plates, many citizens viewed the act as an endorsement of the unpopular war being waged in Vietnam and protested by covering up or altering the motto. Born in China’s western Sichuan province just before Mao’s Cultural Revolution, Lily Tang Williams grew up experiencing extremely poor living conditions, food rationing, social chaos, and Communist indoctrination. In spite of these hardships, in the 1980’s she came to the United States, speaking little English and earned her Master’s degree from University of Texas.
