Remember the Ladies ~ Eight Women in Atkinson History: Thursday, 3/20/25 at 6 PM

With the incorporation of Atkinson in 1767 and throughout the ensuing decades, the town’s women and men together have built an exemplary community. Globally, due to the styling of recorded history, the stories of women — including the women of Atkinson — have been less told. “Remember the Ladies” will present biographical sketches on eight of the countless Atkinson women who all merit space in the town’s historical narrative. Featured in this lecture are six women who lived consecutively in the Kimball House from circa 1772 – 1907: Mary Hazelton Peabody, Elizabeth Smith Shaw Peabody, Elizabeth Richards Hovey, Hannah Goodhue Moody Hovey, Calista A. George, and Anne Annan Maddox. Also featured are Elizabeth Barrows Ussher, a student at the Center School in the 1880s, and Mary Thomas Wheeler, a teacher at the school in the 1890s.
